On March 2, the International Energy Agency (IEA) issued a communique saying that global carbon emissions will rise further in 2021. The novel coronavirus pneumonia slowed down economic activity, and global carbon emissions decreased by 5.8% in 2020, but it began to rebound at the end of 2020. According to the communique, global carbon emissions in December 2020 will increase by 2% compared with the same period in 2019, reaching 60 million tons. The recovery of economic activities will increase energy demand, with major global economies as the main driving factor. The emissions of many economies exceeded the pre crisis level of COVID-19.
In 2020, global carbon emissions will be reduced by nearly 2 billion tons, the largest absolute drop in history.
