Valeric anhydride (C10H18O3) CAS number 2082-59-9, also known as n-valeric anhydride, pentanoic anhydride, pentanoyl pentanoate and pentanoic acid, is mainly used as a synthesis reagent in intermediate pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical steps. The most common application is in the production of the API – Butylphthalide. Used to treat hypertension and claimed to have neuroprotective effects. A more recent and application Valeric anhydride is the preparation of millepachine derivatives and non-imadazole histamine H3-antagonists.
Valeric anhydride’s principal raw material is valeric acid CAS 109-52-4, a short straight-chain alkyl carboxylic acid with the chemical formula CH3(CH2)3COOH. Valeric acid naturally occurs in the plant valerian (valeriana officinalis), which flowers all year long covering large areas of Europe and Asia.
Valeric anhydride is a liquid that is either colourless or slightly yellow. Being corrosive, it should be handled carefully as denoted by its class 8 dangerous good status. However, storage and transport are not too challenging as valeric anhydride melts at -56°C and has a flash of point of 101°C. If a temperature of between -30°C to +30°C is maintained material will remain consistent and stable for periods of up to 2 years after manufacture.
Classified under HS code 2915609000 “pentanoic acids and their salts and esters”, the material is currently not on any tariff lists. At Nanjing Tengxiang we offer standard grade 98% valeric anhydride but also 99% high purity grade at competitive prices.
