In 2025,as global attention to renewable energy continues to increase,Spain,as a country with enormous potential for solar and wind energy,is at the forefront of energy transition. However, despite rapid technological advancements and increasing deployment of clean energy, achieving a fully renewable energy system still requires overcoming a series of challenges.
Electra and Contigo Energía recently analyzed the current situation of Spain’s energy transition.Electra specializes in the field of electric vehicles, while Contigo Energía focuses on the supply and management of 100%renewable energy and self use and energy efficiency solutions. Both companies believe that although the path to transformation is clear, there are still many obstacles, such as modernizing the power grid, developing energy storage, and improving demand management.
For Luis García,General Manager of Contigo Energia, the lack of flexibility in the power system is the primary challenge. He pointed out that although renewable energy is gradually dominating the energy structure, due to insufficient storage capacity and inefficient demand management,it is sometimes impossible to fully utilize all generated energy. In addition, administrative barriers, installation issues with self use infrastructure, and low connectivity with Europe also limit Spain’s ability to exchange energy with other countries in times of energy surplus or shortage.García said,”If we promote energy storage,100%renewable energy electrification, and more flexible markets,we will be able to accelerate the energy transition and better utilize renewable energy
In the field of transportation,Electra’s co CEO Bastien Verot emphasized that electrification of transportation is key to reducing emissions, but its success depends on the availability of a reliable and 100%renewable power grid.He believes that the lack of charging infrastructure is one of the main obstacles at present:”To make electric vehicles a true substitute,we need more fast charging stations and a network that can support greater demand without collapsing.”In addition, energy storage is also considered a key element of transformation, and technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, green hydrogen energy, and pumped storage will enable more efficient management of renewable energy production.
In the process of moving towards a 100%renewable energy system, electrified transportation, promoting energy storage, and decentralized supply are some necessary steps to achieve the goal.Companies such as Electra and Contigo Energia are actively seeking solutions to accelerate this transformation process. However, the pace of transformation will depend on political decision-making,investment,and the willingness to move towards a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable energy system.
